Curriculum Overview

Christ Church First School offers a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum rooted in its Christian ethos (“Let Your Light Shine”). The curriculum is designed to meet the National Curriculum requirements while being adaptable to meet the needs of all learners, including those with additional needs. Across all subjects, the school prioritizes planned vocabulary development to support understanding and communication.

Core Subjects

  • English: Uses Ready Steady Write from Literacy Counts. Focus on spoken language, drama, and structured talk to build vocabulary. Writing is taught through modelled and shared approaches, with purposeful contexts. Adaptations ensure all learners can access texts and writing tasks. Ready Steady Write fully aligns with the recommendations of the July 2025 DfE Writing Framework
  • Maths: Delivered through progressive sequences with concrete, pictorial, and abstract approaches. Vocabulary is explicitly taught to support reasoning and problem-solving. Differentiation ensures concepts are accessible for varied abilities. (Whte Rose based)
  • Science: Based on Cornerstones Curriculum. Topics align with seasons for real-world relevance. Vocabulary is introduced and revisited systematically. Lessons are adapted for different learning styles and needs, including practical investigations and visual supports.
  • History & Geography: Sequenced units develop enquiry skills and critical thinking. Vocabulary banks are planned for each topic. Adaptations include visual timelines, maps, and scaffolded tasks to ensure inclusion.
  • Design & Technology: Focus on designing, making, and evaluating. Vocabulary linked to materials, mechanisms, and processes is taught explicitly. Projects are adapted for motor skills and sensory needs.
  • Computing, Music, PE, Art & Design, Languages, PSHE, RE: Each subject includes planned vocabulary progression and differentiated activities to ensure engagement and success for all learners.
